Kitchen Assistant

Help make lunchtime a highlight of the school day.

We’re looking for a friendly, reliable Catering Assistant to support a busy school kitchen. You’ll help prepare and serve nutritious meals, keep the kitchen running smoothly, and give pupils a welcoming dining experience.

You don’t need to have worked in a school before. If you enjoy being part of a team, take pride in keeping things clean and organised, and can stay calm during a busy lunch service, we’d love to hear from you.

What you’ll be doing

• Helping to prepare ingredients and assemble meals under the guidance of the Head Cook or Catering Manager.

• Serving pupils and staff with a friendly, helpful approach.

• Setting up serving stations and dining areas ready for mealtimes.

• Washing dishes and cleaning equipment, surfaces and kitchen areas to a high standard.

• Handling and storing food safely, including helping with deliveries and stock rotation.

• Supporting the team during busy periods and helping with school events when needed.

• Following the school’s food safety, health and safety, and safeguarding procedures.

What we’re looking for

You’ll be dependable, punctual and comfortable working as part of a team. You’ll be able to follow instructions, communicate well with colleagues, and understand why hygiene matters in a school kitchen.

Experience in catering, food service or a school kitchen would be helpful, as would a Level 2 Food Safety certificate or knowledge of allergens and dietary requirements. These are desirable rather than essential.

Working pattern

This is a term-time role, with hours agreed by the school. Occasional additional days may be required. The role involves standing for extended periods and practical tasks such as food preparation, cleaning and lifting.
