Job Description: SEND Teacher (Specialist School)

Location: Specialist School, Sheffield
Contract: Full-time / Permanent (or Fixed Term, if applicable)
Salary: MPS / UPS + SEN Allowance (dependent on experience)

Role Purpose

The SEND Teacher will plan, deliver, and assess high-quality teaching and learning for pupils with a range of special educational needs and disabilities. The role requires experience of working in specialist school settings, with a strong commitment to inclusive practice, personalised learning, and positive outcomes for all pupils.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons tailored to pupils with complex SEND

  • Create a structured, supportive, and nurturing learning environment

  • Adapt teaching strategies to meet a range of learning styles and needs

  • Use assessment to monitor progress and inform next steps

  • Promote independence, communication, and life skills alongside academic learning

SEND & EHCP Support

  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and review of EHCPs

  • Set, monitor, and review personalised learning targets

  • Write clear and accurate reports for annual reviews and multi-agency meetings

  • Work closely with families, carers, and external professionals

Behaviour & Wellbeing

  • Implement positive behaviour support and emotional regulation strategies

  • Support pupils’ social, emotional, and mental health needs

  • Maintain high expectations while promoting pupils’ dignity and wellbeing

Teamwork & Leadership

  • Work collaboratively with Teaching Assistants and support staff

  • Provide guidance and support to TAs to ensure effective classroom practice

  • Contribute to whole-school development and specialist provision

  • Engage in ongoing professional development and reflective practice

Person Specification

Essential

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

  • Experience teaching pupils with SE

  • Strong understanding of a range of SEND (e.g. Autism, ADHD, SEMH, MLD, SLD, PMLD)

  • Knowledge of EHCP processes and personalised learning

  • Excellent classroom management and communication skills

  • Commitment to safeguarding and inclusive education

Desirable

  • Additional SEND qualifications or specialist training

  • Experience working with alternative or adapted curricula

  • Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team

  • Team Teach or positive behaviour support training desireable
