About the Role
We are seeking a compassionate, patient, and dedicated Special Education Teaching Assistant to join our supportive team. This role involves working closely with children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), providing tailored support to help them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally within the school environment.
You will work under the direction of the SENCo and classroom teacher to implement individualized learning strategies, support communication development, and promote positive behaviour approaches.
Key Responsibilities

Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with autism.

Assist in implementing Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

Support pupils with communication needs, including the use of PECS, visual timetables, and other structured approaches.

Foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.

Encourage independence, emotional regulation, and social interaction skills.

Monitor and record pupil progress and behaviour in line with school policies.

Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and parents to ensure consistent support strategies.
Essential Requirements
-
Previous experience working with children with autism in an educational or care setting.

Understanding of autism-specific strategies (e.g., visual supports, structured routines, sensory regulation).

Patience, empathy, and a calm, positive approach.

Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent experience).
Desirable Skills & Experience
-
Experience supporting non-verbal pupils or those with sensory processing needs.

Knowledge of behaviour support strategies and de-escalation techniques.

Training in safeguarding and first aid.

Experience working alongside external professionals such as speech and language therapists or occupational therapists.
